Charleen Kavleski: Take 4

October 2 – 26, 2014

Amos Eno Gallery is pleased to present Charleen Kavleski’s 16th solo exhibition with the gallery, Take 4. The exhibition will feature an installation of geometric canvas constructions, a single painting selection, and freestanding modular sculptures that focus on the isosceles right triangle as medium. An opening reception for the artist will be held on Friday, October 3rd from 6 to 8PM at the Gallery, suite 120 at The Loom, located at 1087 Flushing Avenue in Bushwick, Brooklyn.

Influenced by module workers and her family’s quilting and masonry traditions, Kavleski explores systemized arrangements of triangles in both flattened and three-dimensional formats. Invoking the half-square figure used in quilt-making, the angular canvases derive from sculptures that consist of four isosceles right triangles joined by leg, hypotenuse, and corner.

The resulting installation creates an ever-changing environment where geometric planes foreshorten and expand depending on the viewer’s position within the artist’s vision grid. Overlapping and folding together, these painted surfaces bring to mind the movements of dance and journey, as in Mountain Pass, 2013.

Charleen earned a degree in Art Education and Fine Art at SUNY New Paltz. She has held numerous one-person shows in New York, where she lives and works, since 1982, and her work has been included in more than 175 prestigious group and juried shows nationwide. She has been an award-winning member of the National Organization of
