Candace Jensen
Candace Jensen is an interdisciplinary visual artist, writer, printmaker, calligrapher, activist and woods witch committed to realizing a culture profoundly informed by deep ecology. Jensen uses hand-made inks, gold leaf, print and painting media to create visual essays, which expand book arts and traditional calligraphic illumination beyond the cultural reliquary of anthropocentrism. Greatly influenced by Lovelock's Gaia Theory and interdependence principles, her work asserts through mythic and symbolic language that Earth herself is worthy of the gilded, decorated Capital.
Jensen has exhibited work in Vermont, Philadelphia, San Francisco, New York, and Antwerp, Belgium. Her writing and artwork have been featured in numerous curated publications and anthologies, in print and online, including the Cambridge Writer's Workshop, Iterant Mag, and Studio Visit Magazine. She has collaborated as an exhibiting artist, curator, and salon coordinator at Amos Eno since 2018. She served on its Board from 2019-2021.
Jensen earned her MFA from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and her BFA from Tyler School of Art, both in Philadelphia. She has completed over 1000 hours of study in Tantra, feminine form yoga, ayurveda, herbalism, and ecological agriculture, and maintains a personal practice and a student-educator relationship to these teachings.
Currently, she proudly serves on the Advisory Council for the Brodsky Center at PAFA, and as Letterpress Director at the Ruth Stone House, as well as the Art Editor for their online poetry and art quarterly. Jensen is both cofounder and programming director for the nascent residency, In Situ Polyculture Commons, which is dedicated to foster an alchemy of resilience, community, creativity, regenerative culture and regenerative food cultivation.
The artist lives and works in Southern Vermont, part of unceded traditional lands of the Western Abenaki Peoples, or Elnu Abenaki, where she is establishing the artist retreat and residency space with her partner, the artist Owen Schuh.
